专业概况

Informatics is the study of information so we study how information is generated, acquired, stored, retrieved, organized, managed, processed, used and exploited for the benefit of companies and organizations.

We teach students how to create bottom-line impact for their employers using information resources.

The department offers an undergraduate degree and a graduate degree in the study of Informatics.

Curriculum

The curriculum involves interdisciplinary courses in computer technology, information technology, business, management, communication, and informatics. In today’s job market, breadth of knowledge and expertise is the key to remaining upwardly mobile and flexible.

The curriculum for health informatics integrates an understanding of health information management (HIM), computer technology, information management, information processing technology, communications, information resources administration, and the management of health information systems. The program provides graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to design, develop, and manage health information systems by combining concepts in healthcare, information technology, and leadership.

Internships

Students are encouraged to complete an internship as part of the major core curriculum (one of two technical electives) as a way to gain valuable real-world experience. Having an internship on the transcript is highly valued by employers. Students often use their existing place of employment as an internship site, but companies across the Upstate region and even departments on campus employ our students as interns.

Career Opportunities

South Carolina needs 10 times the number of qualified multidisciplinary information technology professionals than are being produced today. Today, every department in a company or organization is dependent on information technology and information management.

Graduates are prepared to work in a variety of roles ranging from business analysis, project management, information resources management, information technology support, customer-facing roles such as sales/marketing, and content development for Internet-based resources.
