The Department of Economics offers one program: Master of Arts in Economics. Our program is designed to prepare students for careers in the public or private sectors and gives a solid foundation for students who will pursue a doctorate degree. We specialize in areas of research that align with our recognized expert faculty members, including transportation and development economics.

Goals and Objectives of the Graduate Economics Program at CSULB

The Master of Arts in Economics program has identified three general student learning outcomes for our graduate students. The general outcomes are presented below with corresponding specific outcomes listed immediately beneath.

General Outcome 1: Students should understand and demonstrate proficiency in communicating economic theory at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced level.

A. Students should use economic theory to model and solve economic problems. B. Students should use quantitative reasoning skills to analyze economic theory. C. Students should use economic theory to understand and explain the current economic climate.

General Outcome 2: Students should be able to apply economic theory.

A. Students should use written and oral skills to explain and apply economic theory. B. Students should collect, compile, and interpret data. C. Students should use statistical theory to analyze economic problems. D. Students should apply critical thinking skills to economic applications.

General Outcome 3: Students should demonstrate proficiency in economic research.

A. Students should be able to identify a research question. B. Students should be able to use library and other resources to write a literature review that reflects higher-order critical thinking skills. C. Students should be able to independently identify and analyze economic data, using statistical software to compile data and develop and interpret econometric models.
