Open to music majors, this dual degree allows you to earn your bachelor of music in Composition or Performance and your master of arts in Music Education in only five years, saving you both time and money. Upon graduation, you’ll have both a Bachelors of Music, and Masters of Arts degree, and be eligible for New York State licensure and certification as a teacher of music, grades PK–12.

You will complete a range of liberal arts core courses in the humanities, social sciences, and scientific inquiry and core music classes in music history, music theory, aural comprehension, and keyboard harmony and improvisation. You'll also gain valuable experience that prepares you for your career as an innovative music educator by student teaching during your Graduate year.

Through this accelerated dual degree program, you will also study:

• Foundations in music education

• Music specialization courses, working closely with our artist-faculty

• Technology resources for music educators

• How to develop a curriculum and build a repertoire suitable for your teaching practice

• Pedagogical techniques and methods for elementary and secondary school classrooms

You also have the opportunity to tailor your program by selecting an undergraduate degree that speaks to your unique interests and goals. The following bachelor of music degrees are eligible for this program:

• Instrumental Performance (with a focus on Brass Studies, Jazz Studies, Percussion Studies, String Studies, or Woodwind Studies)

• Music Composition

• Piano Studies

• Vocal Performance

In this accelerated dual degree, you will take courses toward your master’s degree in your junior and senior years.

Careers and Outcomes

Graduates of this dual degree program are eligible for New York State initial teaching certification as a teacher of music in all grades (PK–12) upon completing two semesters of student teaching in New York City public and independent schools, and in community music settings, under the close supervision of experienced music teachers and teaching artists.
