专业概况

Expand on your knowledge of US and world history and develop social studies curricula to meet the needs of your secondary and high school students. You'll build on your initial teaching certification and learn new teaching skills, theories, and strategies, tailoring your program of study to your professional interests. This program leads to eligibility for New York State professional teaching certification.

You’ll study US and world history in the context of social studies curricula, acquiring knowledge you can apply in the classroom. Courses that offer theories and teaching strategies include Language and Literacy for Upper Grades, Teaching Students with Special Needs, and Curriculum Development for Diverse Learners.

You'll also have the opportunity to tailor your program of study based on your interests and previous course work, taking classes both within the program and in other departments at NYU Steinhardt and NYU's Graduate School of Arts and Science.

Our faculty members are heading social studies curriculum reform and teacher development efforts. You will work closely with them to learn approaches for teaching social studies to secondary and high school students and strategies for adapting social studies instruction to meet the special needs of students.

Careers and Outcomes

Upon graduation, you’ll be ready to put your new skills to work in your current role, or advance your career by obtaining your New York State professional teaching certification and embarking on a job as a social studies teacher, teacher trainer, or curriculum specialist in middle and high schools, educational agencies, and community colleges.
