专业概况
在这里学什么?For the students in the 4+ I years program, the B.S. is awarded after the completion of a minimum of 120 credit hours and all General Education, University, College and Major Field requirements, as is the case for students in the conventional B.S. programs. The M.S. degree is earned, after the students have completed a minimum of 32 graduate credit hours and all coursework required of students in the conventional M.S. in program.
Students who have been admitted to the 5-year program after the completion of 90 hours but fail to meet subsequent 5-year program requirements revert to conventional student status and must meet all B.S. in Chemistry requirements. Since the B.S. in Chemistry allows at least 21 credits of electives, the double-counted classes taken at the graduate level can be applied towards their BS degree. They may then re-apply to the conventional M.S. program. If admitted, these students are subject to conventional M.S. program policies and requirements.
The degree requirements for the M.S. degree in Chemistry total 32 credits. Students can choose between the non-thesis and the thesis options for the M.S. degree. Students who want to participate in the M.S. in Chemistry Program with the thesis option will be strongly advised to start their individual research projects in their senior year. By doing so, they can begin to accumulate research experience and results at the undergraduate level. When students then begin the graduate program, they may continue their undergraduate project or, if appropriate, change to a new project.
4+1 CHEMISTRY MASTER'S DEGREE - RESEARCH TRACK
Students wishing to consider the 4+1 master's degree in chemistry as a research track should apply to the Department of Chemistry's Graduate Committee by the end of the first semester of their junior year. Upon approval, they should select a research advisor and register for up to 12 credit hours of Advanced Chemistry Lab, CHM 479/679, throughout the remaining course of their undergraduate curriculum. These credit hours will be double-counted for the master's degree.
Upon matriculation into the master's degree program, students will continue their research and register for at least two credit hours of CHM 699 - M.S. Thesis, and at least two graduate lecture courses per semester. It is expected that students normally will continue with the research that they established as an undergraduate.
