Unpredictability clouds the horizon and rarely has risk been more pronounced. Health pandemics are sending shockwaves through societies foundations. Cyber threats silently infiltrate information technology systems. Climate change is creating resource scarcity and widening inequalities. Geopolitical tensions, populist forces, terrorism and escalating trade wars ripple the previously calm waters occupied by multinationals. Corporate reputations are precious but precarious and a single error on social media can unleash corporate crisis. The path to resilience is challenging and requires a new generation of skilled risk managers.

Our industry recognised degree is double-accredited by the CII and the IRM. You will develop decision-making skills by applying state-of-the-art risk management frameworks and risk modelling software to analyse real world case studies in; crisis management and communication, cyber risk, insurance, business continuity management, strategic and project risk management.

You will also develop real-life practical skills. Our pioneering Risk Clinic enables you to work with a team to deliver real risk management projects for real customers and our paid placement in third year with an industry partner will differentiate you from other graduates.

This is the only programme of its kind in the UK and leading companies employ risk graduates directly. Our graduates can enter any industry sector and work for; PWC, Marsh & McLennan, GlaxoSmithKline, Morgan Stanley, Scottish Power, Aviva, Turner & Townsend, Lloyds of London, Transport for London (TfL), Balfour Beatty, Network Rail, Local Authorities, Mott MacDonald, AON and the NHS.

Assessment

Our approach to the learning, teaching and assessment of our students is tailored to the academic needs of our students while preparing them for the job market, as well as developing their ability to operate independently as lifelong learners.

Our curriculum is designed to develop our students knowledge and understanding of risk management as an academic discipline, and to enable them to reflect logically and critically on risk theory and practice. In parallel with this, the curriculum is designed to promote employability. These skills are embedded throughout the programme and a wide range of methods are used to ensure the acquisition of professional, practical and personal development skills.

Teaching methods

Direct industry awareness and experience is central to our teaching, through the use of guest lectures and presentations at all levels. This is particularly important for our new students, as it helps them understand the sector in which they will eventually find employment.

A member of the Risk academic team acts as a careers tutor for students and assists them with their employability skills and graduate job search. This tutor acts a focal point for both graduate job and student placement opportunities.

Between Year 3 and Year 4, our students have opportunities to undertake paid summer placements in a diverse range of organisations, providing invaluable experience in the development of both professional competence and the graduate skills and attributes required by employers.
