Mathematics is an essential component of any liberal arts education, especially in this age of technology. At Maryville, the study of mathematics combines both practical and theoretical aspects. All students are required to complete a general education requirement in mathematics. The exact course depends on the requirements of the student’s major field of study.

Mathematicians are valued for their logic, rigor and analytic ability. They are viewed as capable of engaging in creative problem solving across a wide range of disciplines. Mathematical Science majors have a remarkably diverse set of choices for embarking on their careers.

Long a critical element of science and engineering, mathematical modeling is now being used in industries that require specialized mathematical modeling expertise to solve complex business problems. Maryville University’s Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Modeling for Business is an innovative program that integrates computer skills and mathematical theory with practical applications in economics, finance and general business.

Project-Based Learning

Students focused on teaching mathematics in grades 9–12 can take advantage of Maryville’s Early Access program entering in their junior year. Students complete the mathematics major with specific science certification requirements and then the M.A. in Education in their fifth year.

Maryville has more school placements than any other university in the region, providing students numerous opportunities to apply the techniques they learn in classes to the classroom experience.

Curricula recommended by the Mathematical Association of America and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics are offered for those students interested in pursuing graduate work.

Maryville University requires that students provide proof of English proficiency for study at the University. The following are acceptable means of providing proof of English proficiency: TOEFL: 69 overall with no sub score lower than 15, or IELTS: 6.0 with no sub score lower than 5, or DET: 40, or PTE ACADEMIC: 47, or ELS Center: Level 112 completed with a 2.5 grade or better, or U.S. University/College Study: English Composition 104 equivalent with a “C” grade or better. English for non-native speakers does not qualify, or A Level: 1 “A” grade or better in English or 3 “B” grades or better in subjects other than Math
