专业概况

The Bachelor of Arts in Information Management & Systems/Health Information Management (IMS/HIM) is the only degree program of its kind in South Carolina. We are working with Greenville Technical College, Midlands Technical College and Florence-Darlington Technical College to create this unique progression program. Students who have received an associate’s degree from an accredited health information management program and hold the RHIT certificate (or take and successfully pass the registry exam within six to 12 months of entrance into the program) may enroll in the accredited HIM Program.

Curriculum

The IMS/Health Information Management Program can be attended full or part time and includes the added value of a healthcare informatics component. The majority of courses are online which allows for flexible weekly schedules and 24/7 availability. The IMS/HIM Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

We have combined the customary HIM courses with informatics courses designed to strengthen your understanding of technology and business. Students will graduate with HIM expertise as well as knowledge of computer applications, databases, and programming, giving them an advantage in their field.

Interested students can transfer not only general education classes, but also many program-related courses. Coursework includes the study of organizations and administration; information technology and trends; network applications and database systems; and legal and ethical responsibilities in healthcare.

Career Opportunities

This degree provides graduates with the chance to assume management roles in dealing with health information and health information systems. Career opportunities exist in a variety of health-related settings, such as hospitals, long term care facilities, clinics and private practices. Other opportunities are available in consulting firms, government agencies, insurance companies and software vendors.

The Health Information Manager (HIM) supports the provider with documented patient care, reimbursement, teaching research, performance improvement and legal inquiries. The HIM manages people as well as information. If you like the healthcare environment but do not want direct patient contact, this is the program for you!
