Our integrated master’s degree will advance your knowledge of chemistry through our innovative teaching and your own research, enabling you to build professional skills. Chemistry is No. 1 for Student Satisfaction in the National Student Survey, 2019.This four year course is for those who want to gain direct chemistry research experience and are considering a career as a research chemist in industry or academia. The variety of coursework items embedded within the course allow for the development of chemistry and transferable skills, giving our graduates excellent prospects. A wide range of teaching styles are used from traditional lectures and problem-solving classes to team-based learning workshops. In the laboratory you will engage in a highly innovative and cutting edge laboratory course designed to equip you with the basic skills required of a practising chemist. This includes how to handle chemicals safely; measure out chemicals and solutions accurately; choose and use appropriate glassware and undertake reactions; use spectrometers such as IR and UV/vis and interpret the spectra; to analyse and present data. You will be trained how to keep an accurate laboratory notebook and write up technical reports.You’ll have the opportunity to focus on topics which suit your interests and aspirations and develop your chemical knowledge and laboratory skills along with a range of important transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills, and the ability to conduct cutting-edge research. You can even spend a semester or year abroad, or on placement in industry.With a master’s degree, your knowledge and skills will be very appealing to employers and academics as a trained researcher. You may have developed a specific interest in an area of chemistry such as fuel cell technology, catalysis, sugar chemistry or organic synthesis which you’d like to explore at PhD level (over 50% of our MChem cohort move on to a research degree). If you choose to go straight into employment, you might work in the chemical, pharmaceutical or environmental industries as a research scientist, analytical chemist or in other roles where scientific knowledge and related skills are in demand, such as scientific instrument sales, patent law or environmental analysis.

ABB-BBC courses = Senior Secondary School Graduation Certificate with 80% overall plus Gaokao with 75%; BCC-CCC courses = Senior Secondary School Graduation Certificate with 75% overall plus Gaokao with 70%; Applicants to courses with a subject specific requirement will be considered on an individual basis. OR an appropriate pre-university/ foundation year programme. IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each subtest.
