Birkbeck’s innovative new LLM in Law and New Technologies is a research-led programme that focuses on how new technologies are transforming the way society operates - the way we communicate, the way we work, the way we do business, the way we travel - and the profound consequences of these changes for the law.

The programme is centred around seminars in which you will discuss contemporary challenges posed by new technologies. Following an introduction to practical and theoretical ideas on the most pressing questions connected to law and technology, you will then apply these ideas to contemporary world problems such as the erosion of democracy, climate change, economic inequality, political radicalisation, cybercrime and the new wave of automation facing labour markets.

The programme is aimed at both law and non-law graduates.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is an integral part of your university studies and usually consists of a combination of coursework and examinations, although this will vary from course to course - on some of our courses, assessment is entirely by coursework. The methods of assessment on this course are specified below under 'Methods of assessment on this course'. You will need to allow time to complete coursework and prepare for exams.

CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITY

Graduates may use the degree to advance their existing career or to help them change or develop a new career path in, for example, policy development, practice and analysis, from within organisations across public, private and non-governmental sectors, including local and national government bodies, law enforcement and justice agencies, think-tanks, media outlets and universities.

To study a Master's degree that requires a UK undergraduate degree with a 2:1 classification, they will typically need to have one of the following: a Bachelor's degree (Xueshi) from a 211, 985 or top national university with an overall average grade of 75%; a Bachelor's degree from a national university with an overall average grade of 80%; a Bachelor's degree from a high-ranking private university with an overall average grade of 80%; a Master's degree with an overall average grade of 70%. If they do not meet these criteria, they can apply for Birkbeck’s International Foundation Programme, which acts as a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate study, preparing students to study a Master’s degree in the UK. There are progression pathways onto various courses at Birkbeck.
