Designed for GOC registered dispensing opticians who are already in practice, our new blended learning course enables you to study whilst working. Throughout the year you will cover the theoretical aspects of the course through online learning, where you will be supported through your course tutors and interacting with your fellow students through discussion boards.

During the course you’ll attend classes on our Cambridge campus during two residential visits per trimester. There you’ll be given a grounding in clinical skills in our purpose-built clinical teaching facilities which you’ll then develop further in your workplace and – with the support of your registered practice supervisor – will actively engage in contact lens practice for at least one day a week in your practice throughout the course.

Assessment

This course uses innovative assessment methods to assess your progress towards registration.

The development of clinical skills in the workplace is assessed through completion of a workbook detailing a series of clinical tasks. Your theoretical knowledge is tested using formative online assessments whilst clinical competence is assessed using videoed demonstrations of clinical skills and clinical scenarios to assess data interpretation and clinical reasoning.

Careers

Registration with the GOC as a dispensing optician with contact lens specialty will open up further career options in optical practice, which attract a significant increase in salary. The contact lens specialty, along with study at postgraduate level, will open up additional career progression routes in industry, professional services, as well as education.
