The 150-hour program in accounting leads to the simultaneous conferring of a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Master of Science in Taxation at the completion of all program requirements. The program is structured to meet the education requirements of the New York State Education Department for C.P.A. Licensure. Students must be admitted to the Master of Science in Taxation Program following the completion of ACT 302 Intermediate Accounting II. Typical requirements for admission to the Master of Science in Taxation Program are as follows: GPA of 3.0 or above (not rounded) in accounting courses, a grade in ACT 301 and 302 (Intermediate Accounting I and II) of B or above, a GMAT score of 450 or above, and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (not rounded).

Mission Statement

The Department of Accounting in the Madden School of Business strives to educate and develop graduates to manage, thrive and lead in public accounting, corporate and other related business positions.

Our program will prepare students at every level to excel by focusing on the fundamentals of ethical decision- making in the accounting profession through the spirit of inquiry. The Jesuit tradition of developing both the intellect and the whole person translates into accounting professionals who concern themselves not only with the financial health of an organization, but with contributions to society as a whole. The Department of Accounting program will be characterized by rigorous curricula grounded in the liberal arts and offered in a personalized learning environment. The faculties, in partnership with alumni, provide a connection to the business community and collaborate to advance knowledge and the application of accounting theory and practice.

Learning Goals and Objectives

• Learning Goal 1: Describe the steps in the audit cycle using the revenue approach and analyze financial information necessary to provide financial statement assurance through the use of professional audit engagement management software, specifically CCH Audit Engagement.
• Learning Goal 2: Apply and evaluate financial information and transactions for financial reporting through analysis and preparation of external financial statements.
• Learning Goal 3: Evaluate internal cost and divisional information to assess performance and plan for the future within an organization.
• Learning Goal 4: Utilize primary tax research sources to apply tax laws to situations impacting US Taxpayers in order to comply with applicable regulations and provide tax planning advice. Students will demonstrate compliance using professional tax preparation software, specifically CCH ProSystems, as well as manually preparing tax returns.
